COLLABORATE ON TWO WORLD PREMIERE PERFORMANCES

The 2013-2014 Brian Webb Dance Company season kicks off with two world premieres October 11 and 12 at the Timms Centre for the Arts: Nicole Mion’s Quiver and Brian Webb Dance Company’s what awaits me. Quiver flies high in the clouds of the imagination. Nicole Mion’s new work captures her magic realism way of thinking about, and experiencing the air that connects us all. In two solos tailored for stellar Canadian performers, Justine Chambers and James Gnam the scene is set for two meetings of the mind, and two takes on the magical. Quiver features live music by singer-song writer Tariq.

A quiver is known as a container for holding sharp objects and musical instruments, and for Mion is a choreographic frame for making the imagination dance. Quiver entertains the existence of invisible energies, dancing with absent people and inanimate objects where the energy of a plastic bag, a fan, and a hoodie brings an inner landscape to life and the air around us vibrate.

A collaboration between Brian Webb and Nancy Sandercock, what awaits me is danced to Beethoven’s C-Sharp Minor String Quartet, performed live by the Enterprise Quartet, with a brand-new original composition by Dave Wall in place of the fifth movement. what awaits me also features videography by Edmonton film-maker Kyle Armstrong.

Nancy Sandercock’s life in art has proceeded down three related but distinct tracks, creating her own dances since 1988; playing drumsin an alternative band, Polar Goldie Cats and bass, marimba, etc., for groups including Puss and Hot Tinkle; and collaborating on found sound / electronic sound-scores for her own dance work with noise artists like Rick Potts of Solid Eye and Bobb Bruno of Best Coast. She’s also very interested in and has maintained a visual art practice, working most recently with digital video and on developing her skills as a costume designer and fabricator.

Kyle Armstrong is a Canadian filmmaker and artist. Working with super8, 16mm and lo-fi video, Armstrong frequently alters film using bleaches, dyes, scratches and paint on his own footage and found films. Armstrong’s most recent film Magnetic Reconnection features an original score by Grammy Award winning producer/composer Jim O’Rourke, voice-over by acclaimed singer-songwriter/actor Will Oldham and likely some of the best footage of the aurora borealis ever captured; it received its world premiere at AFI Fest 2012, has since screened film festivals world-wide, and won the 2013 Edmonton International Film Festival prize. Kyle has been working withGuy Maddin on the acclaimed director’s Spiritisms project as a deputized director, 2nd Unit Director and visual manipulator. Armstrong is the president of the Metro Cinema Society in Edmonton, and in 2012 he was a recipient of the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Emerging Artist Award.

Dave Wall’s work demonstrates a willingness to explore. Always open to new musical experiences, he has performed in and composed for an impressively diverse range of situations. Ambient, electroacoustic, noise, avante-garde concert music, and all popular styles of music have fallen within his scope of activity. He has also composed music for dance, theatre, and film. He is currently working on a doctorate in composition, exploring computer technology, using music and sound to create a deeper awareness of the nature of urban spaces. His growing interest in noise as an aesthetic choice is based on the connection between sound and its effects on our world.

The Enterprise Quartet is a university-based ensemble featuring members of the Department of Music and the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra: Guillaume Tardif, 1^st violin; Yue Deng, 2^nd violin; Charles Pilon, viola; Tanya Prochazka, cello. This rich project involves research and community development, with the particular objective of enlivening Edmonton’s cultural landscape with free, high-quality chamber music performances featuring Edmonton’s own wealth of local talent.

Brian Webb has a keen interest in working with artists from other media and believes in collaboration being the democratic exchange between individuals to make something new. This exchange includes the audience he has developed in Edmonton as a presenter of new dance and interdisciplinary art. His works tour Canada regularly. In addition to earning a Queen’s Diamond Jubilee medal earlier this year, Venture Magazine also named Brian Webb Dance Company one of Alberta’s 25 Most Innovative Companies.
